From the age of about two years onwards, established trees can usually outlast a drought. They can do this because their roots reach deep into the soil, finding moisture. Newly planted trees are still developing their root systems and, therefore, require more frequent watering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any trees under the age of two years need more water than their older siblings. You should apply water one to three times a week, soaking the root ball and the ground around it. Doing this encourages the tree to send feeder roots further out, which creates a robust root system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the roots extend outwards, expand the area you water accordingly. To encourage further growth, you should moisten the root ball and the soil just beyond it. For comprehensive tree root care<\/a>, researching the specific species is essential to understand its water requirements and ensure optimal health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t Forget Your Established Trees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most people wonder how often to water new trees in hot weather and forget about the more established ones. This is fine when you have plenty of rainfall but not helpful when it\u2019s very hot<\/a> or during a drought.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you can see that your tree is taking strain, you should use soaker hoses to moisten the area from a foot away from the trunk to beyond the drip line. You should use enough water to moisten the soil at a depth of ten inches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Water at the Right Time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Always check to see if you should water by punching small, six-inch holes in random areas under the canopy. If you can\u2019t push the probe in easily, you need to water the tree.  Water the tree in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the hottest part of the day. You should also use a soaker hose to deliver a steady drip of moisture for at least half an hour at a time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mulch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mulch is your friend in hot weather because it protects the soil in many ways. It keeps the soil cool by protecting it from the sun and helps it to retain moisture. It also smothers weeds that might otherwise compete for resources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, when the mulch decomposes, it releases nutrients and creates a loamy, well-aerated mix. This makes it easier to keep the soil cool in the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apply the mulch from the edge of the canopy line to about a foot away from the trunk. Keeping it away from the bark prevents a possible fungal infection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
