Tree care professionals trim and prune trees for various reasons, all aimed at improving the tree’s appearance and health. Although trees can survive without trimming or pruning, routine maintenance allows them to reach their full potential.

However, tree trimming is as much about science as it is about skill and requires proper techniques to do it properly. As Eureka’s reliable tree trimming and pruning experts, we’ll look closely at four tree trimming techniques pros use.

1. Crown Thinning

This technique involves selectively trimming the tree’s inner branches evenly throughout the crown. Opening up the crown lets more air and light get to the tree without a major change in the tree’s appearance.

By removing dead, weak, and defective branches, crown thinning also reduces the weight of heavy limbs. Tree care experts consistently thin out the tree without significantly altering its shape or size, removing only 10% to 20% of the tree branches from the edge of the canopy.

2. Crown Raising

Crown raising or lifting involves cutting branches from the tree’s lower section to provide clearance for buildings, traffic, or a view. Experts typically perform this trimming technique gradually over an extended period. Often, they’ll remove a few limbs less than four inches in diameter when pruning every year to avoid cutting too many lower limbs at once. As such, this trimming technique works well for pruning young trees with smaller branches.

3. Crown Reduction

Professionals generally use this pruning technique on older, more mature trees. Reducing the crown involves removing a tree branch back to a growing lateral branch to help strengthen the tree and encourage new growth.

Once the growing season begins in the spring, the lateral branch becomes part of the new tree crown. Unlike tree topping, crown reduction uses smaller cuts, which removes less of the crown and leaves plenty of old growth for structure.

4. Crown Cleaning

This simply refers to the removal of broken, dying, diseased, and dead branches when trimming a tree. Experts include it as part of the other tree trimming techniques and perform it at any time.

Crown cleaning makes the tree stronger, increases tree safety, and prevents future damage.

Bottom Line

You may notice that each of the tree trimming or pruning techniques involves the crown. That’s because the crown produces leaves for photosynthesis. Any tree without a strong and healthy crown will weaken over time.
